'PREDIS, the denied nation' tells the story of Friulian independence throughout the twentieth century, focusing on the figures of the 'Friulian fighting priests' who tried to arouse the conscience of their own people so they would become aware of their own history, culture, language but above all of their own identity.
After two years filming all around this gorgeus little nation called Friûl, we are approaching the end of our journey. We met great persons, wonderful locations and we are in love with this country. We hope that our film will help people get to know Friûl, maybe in a different and more profound way.
After the Master of Arts in Political Science at the University of Triest, Massimo Garlatti Costa studied at Ipotesi Cinema Film School with Director Ermanno Olmi. He then moved to the UK where he obtained a Master of Arts Degree in Film and Television Directing & Screenwriting at the Northern Media School, Sheffield Hallam University. Massimo is also a graduate of the European Cross-Media Workshop The Pixel Lab, of the Asia-Europe Producers Workshop Ties That Bind, of the European Producers Workshop EAVE and of the Eurodoc Transregional Training Programme. Massimo Garlatti-Costa has been working for almost 20 years both in the UK and in Italy directing dozen of documentaries, short films for BBC, Channel 4, RAI and several other Channels.

Friulian or Friulan (About this sound furlan (help·info) or, affectionately, marilenghe in Friulian, friulano in Italian, Furlanisch in German, furlanščina in Slovene; also Friulian) is a Romance language belonging to the Rhaeto-Romance family, spoken in the Friuli region of northeastern Italy.
Friulian has around 600,000 speakers, the vast majority of whom also speak Italian. It is sometimes called Eastern Ladin since it shares the same roots as Ladin, but, over the centuries, it has diverged under the influence of surrounding languages, including German, Italian, Venetian, and Slovene.
Documents in Friulian are attested from the 11th century and poetry and literature date as far back as 1300. By the 20th century, there was a revival of interest in the language that has continued to this day. In North America the more common English form is Friulan for both the language and the ethnic identity of the people living in Friuli and abroad.
Friûl is an area of Northeast Italy with its own particular cultural and historical identity. The multiethnic and subsequent multilingual tradition of Friuli means that the name of the region varies according to locality: Friûl in the local ladin language, Friuli in Italian and Furlanija in Slovene and South Slavic languages. The name Friuli originates from the ancient Roman town of Forum Iulii (now Cividale del Friuli). This region is situated in Italy's northeast and borders Slovenia and Austria. Friuli Venezia Giulia overlooks the Adriatic Sea and is surrounded by high mountains, enclosing many different landscapes. The mountain sceneries of the Eastern Dolomites are truly spectacular: the Carnia and the Julian Alps, in addition to the lakes, valleys and protected areas. From its boundary with the Italian region of Veneto up to the town of Monfalcone, the coast is trimmed with lagoons and has long sandy beaches, The great variety of landscapes matches the rich and variegated cultural heritage that was determined by a complex history and by the confluence of different civilizations in this territory. For this reason, Friuli looks like a small universe with many different traditions: it is the “land of contrasts”.
The mountainous region of Cjargne / Carnia takes its name from the ancient civilization of the Carni, a population of Celtic origin, and even though there are still discrepancies as to its actual extension, it covers roughly the northwestern section of the Alps of Friuli. In fact, it is through a mixture between the Carni and the Romans that the people and language of Friuli are said to be born.
The 1976 Friuli earthquake, also known in Italy as Terremoto del Friuli (Friulian earthquake), took place on May 6 with a moment magnitude of 6.5 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme). The shock occurred in the Friuli region in northeast Italy near the town of Gemona del Friuli. Up to 978 people were killed, 2,400 were injured, and 157,000 were left homeless.
